Early warning system set-up in Miller, Ash Canyons

The folllowing is a news release from the West Coronado BAER Team:

Two tipping bucket rain gauges are being installed today in the upper reaches of Miller and Ash Canyons, located in the Monument Fire on National Forest land.

“The Burn Area Emergency Response (BAER) team and its partners have discussed the importance of early warning systems for public safety and the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) rose to the occasion,” said Monument BAER Team Leader Justin Seastrand.

New picture of rare ocelot seen in the Huachuca Mountains

The following is a news release from Mark Hart of Arizona Game and Fish:

The Arizona Game and Fish Department announced today that it has obtained another confirmed photo of a rare ocelot taken in the Huachuca Mountains.

That photo is being compared to others taken of an ocelot Feb. 9 in the same mountain range to determine if they are the same cat.  Such an analysis may be inconclusive because of differences in photographic elements.

Coronado National Memorial reopens

The following is a news release from the Southeast Arizona Group:

Coronado National Memorial will implement a partial reopening beginning Thursday, July 7, 2011. 

Visitors will have the opportunity to see the results of the Monument Fire in the grasslands as well as stop by the visitor center to view images of the fire and the results left in the memorial.  Montezuma Pass Rd (FR 61) will remain closed, except for emergency and administrative vehicles.

Coronado National Forest still closed, despite recent rain

(KOLD) - It's clear to see the Coronado National Forest is still closed due to the extreme fire danger. Officials say it will remain that way until we get a significant amount of rainfall. They say what we've seen so far isn't nearly enough.

"There's a lot of places that are still very very dry, as dry as you can get," Heidi Schewel with the Coronado National Forest said.

Schewel added that the monsoon storms we've seen so far have been spotty and some parts of the forest haven't even seen rain yet.

Crews contain 98 percent of Monument Fire

As of July 1, the Monument Fire, which has burned about 30,526 acres is now 98 percent contained, according to the Cochise County Sheriff's Office.

Approximatley 70 personnel including 2 crews, 5 engines and 1 helicopter are at the scene.

Mop up on Monument Fire, 92 percent contained

Crews continue to mop up the Monument Fire south of Sierra Vista, which is currently 92 percent contained.

Fire crews are working on putting out hot spots in the Carr and Oversight canyons.

Firefighters are also working on a fire break for future wildfires.

Lightning causes wildfire on Fort Huachuca

Firefighters are battling a lightning-caused wildfire on Fort Huachuca on Tuesday night.

Forest Service crews are battling the blaze, which is burning in Upper Garden Canyon, from the ground and the air.

It's not clear how many acres have burned or whether any structures on threatened.
