Sierra Vista pond renovation to improve aquatic habitat

By Alexis Krasinski, Tucson News Now Intern

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Sierra Vista Ranger
District will renovate the lower pond at Brown Canyon Ranch
to improve the aquatic habitat for threatened and endangered species, such as the Chiricahua Leopard Frog, from June 10 through June 14.

The
pond will have limited accessibility while the renovations are being completed. The USDA Forest Service says the project is expected to be completed within one to two days.

The
renovations include removing the plastic lining and accumulated sediment from
the pond. The pond will then be prepared for new lining. Throughout this
process the vegetation in surrounding area may be damaged or removed.

The
entire surface disturbance will be contained within the pond depression and
will not exceed .16 acres, according to the forest service.
