On Saturday August 31, at 9:40 pm, the Cochise County Sheriff's Office was participating in a stationary DUI Checkpoint with the Southeastern Arizona DUI Task Force.
A dark 2001 Chevrolet Silverado passed through the checkpoint; deputies ran the license plate and noted that it was registered to a 1969 truck not a new vehicle.
Moments later CCSO deputies attempted to stop the driver of the truck, while it was on SR 90, headed east bound near Colonia De Salud. According to CCSO the vehicle failed to yield to deputies, instead turning south on Moson Road before being forced to stop due to significant vehicle damage on Blaze Way and Pintek Lane.
The driver of the truck fled the scene and could not be located, according to CCSO, but the passenger was taken into custody. The passenger, identified as Ellis Jon Mathis. Mathis told CCSO that he was homeless.
